Will schools need to re-examine the teaching of writing?

by Malcolm Davison

As good web writing becomes associated with improved company communication will it become an essential job skill for the CV?

Just as in the past when a job seeker would proudly list typing, shorthand and computer software skills on their CV – I believe they will soon see the competitive advantage of offering a proven ability in web writing.

Taking this a stage further, as schools and colleges expand their vocational training to help students gain that all important first foothold in the job marketplace that we are already seeing web writing being added to course lists.

But why should students have to re-learn something that could have been taught differently in the first place?

We have found that people who learn the craft of writing for the web then apply the same techniques of careful structuring, formatting and precision writing to improve their communication on paper.

Schools really need to rethink their whole approach to teaching writing. Perhaps, in future, we can expect the subject to be be taught at an younger age in school.

I hope that in the future web writing will become a part of the school curriculum, perhaps being introduced as a core subject in GCSE examinations.
