About us

'Writing for the web' was set up ten years ago by Malcolm Davison who had been working in corporate communications at a senior level. The company is now the market leader in web writing training.

Malcolm Davison found that large organisations were having difficulty in communicating effectively on screen, resulting in:

  • poor internal communications due to badly conceived and written intranet content
  • loss of business through inadequate website communication
  • failure to understand layout, navigation and usability issues

malcom then created a course that set out practical guidelines and checklists for web writers.

Unlike other courses which major on usability, 'writing to sell', 'writing for search engines' or are 100% about writing - the content is a careful blend of the necessary skills for effective web communication. No two courses are alike. We adjust the balance and content to suit each client's needs.

The course material

You get 70 pages of course material (20,000 words). This includes sample web text, exercises, model answers, a reference manual, web site links, bibliography and useful utilities.

Inhouse and public courses

Our inhouse web writing training courses are fun and packed with useful and up-to-the-minute tips and ideas. We consider intranet, website and email newsletter content writing - or just one of these.

We aim to motivate web publication teams, improve communication standards and stimulate better audience response.

Check out our inhouse course content. We also run public training courses.

Since the start, staff from more than 400 organisations from 20 countries have attended our web writing courses in the UK or at locations abroad.

Other clients include the European Commission in Brussels, the UN in Geneva, Communities and Local Government, the Scottish Government and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Check out who we have worked for in your industry / business / organisation sector. You will find some interesting case studies in our ten year review.

Keeping ahead

All the course material has been totally revamped in the last year, taking aboard the very latest thinking and research from around the world.

We have provided training for 34 local authorities, of these 31 have gone on to gain a Plain English Crystal Mark.

Our clients are constantly feeding back their experiences, thoughts and ideas on web writing, accessibility and usability. We also regularly introduce ideas of our own.

Every year we are invited to judge web entries for international corporate communications competitions and provide critiques on entrants' websites. Many are global companies. We also speak at conferences. So, unlike some web writing trainers, you really can be confident that we do know our chosen specialist subject!
